Title: Fragments of the Past

Description: This piece explores not only my interest in ancient textile techniques, but also the social history that surrounds them.

The hanging was inspired by the Nyoga or Ndbele beading bridal train characteristically worked in fine white beads with colour used to emphasize small geometric shapes. Few of these pieces have survived, the rarity therefore accentuating the fragility and vulnerability of textiles to the ravages of time and climate changes. Fragments that survive provide a precious insight into the history of the day and the role of women at the time.

Tradition shrouds many of the textiles and techniques, and individuals involved in the replicating of such pieces work in earnest to be true to the craft.

Such imitation can become all encompassing, often stifling creativity and making it difficult to break free. The panel is a very personal one which lays many ghosts to rest allowing me to move on. In the word of a friend, ‘it is just me – where I am now!’

Title: Journeys through a changing landscape:
Trekking South

Description: Twice a year I travel to Cape Town journeying by car with the modern convenience of a cell phone and over-dosing on take-away food.

I am struck by the vastness of the country and the changing landscape as I travel through the different provinces. The road extends – never ending – before me, and my mind wanders to the pioneering spirits that have gone before. I do not share their feeling of anticipation and adventure as my route is mapped out and I have travelled this way before.

Hopefully they experienced the same sense of destiny and belonging as I do on seeing the rich green rolling hills of my adoptive home.
