Title: Psilosis'
Description: I started quilting by attending a quick quilt one day course as I am sure many people have. After completing a few quilts I decided that a machine could do the traditional quilts a lot better than I could. I also needed to work more loosely.
I have a diploma in Ceramics from the Technicon and prefer working in 3D. After a chenille demonstration, I was excited about the possibilities.
In my piece I have explored the process of the layers created by chenille. The black background gives a strong spine on which to hang the coloured layers. I have used primary and rich colours and have brought the darker colours underneath forward, playing with the superimposing and juztapositioning of these layers. I explored by sewing the chenille lines at 90degrees to each other, creating geometric shapes that could be used in different ways. This echoes the cross and square designs used in Kazakhstan traditional garments.
I am inspired by the traditional embroidery of the Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and central Africa. The garments and cloths use similar techniques and colours. Strong geometric shapes and colours hold the pieces together. I use the cross design as it is a strong shape and a symbol in all cultures and religions.
