Title: Orange
Description: A small celebration of colour and felt.
My background is in History of Art with an MA from Pretoria University. I started creative embroidery with Fiona Kirkwood in the early 1980’s and ever since, I have been fascinated by textiles, textures, colours and shapes. Felt appeals to me because it is a completely hands-on process: from off the back of the sheep via washing, dyeing and carding, to felting. There is no spinning wheel, weaving loom or sewing machine between my hands and the woolen fabric. I particularly enjoy dyeing my own wool, refining colours in the carding process and over-dyeing pieces. Felt is a wonderfully tactile material, well suited for hand embroidery.
I would like to work through the possibilities of combining wool and silk into delicate and pliable textiles. It would be ideal for shibori dyeing. My own work is presently on the backburner. I am very involved in a project of beaded felt balls. (www.woolbeadballs.co.za) It is a delightful opportunity for empowering twelve rural women in KwaZulu-Natal and a most rewarding experience to share their increasing self-confidence and constant improvement in the quality of their work.
