Description: Fiona Kirkwood was born in Scotland and has lived in South Africa since 1975. She obtained a DA from the Glasgow School of Art (1971), and a MAFA from the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg (1983). Her MAFA thesis was titled 'The Development Of Fibre Art With Particular Reference To South Africa And African Indigenous Functional Fibre Art'. She lectures part-time in the Department of Fine Art at the Durban Institute of Technology.
Kirkwood works with fibre and mixed media to produce sculptures and installations that reflect political, social and environmental issues. The focus of her most recent works has been on the HIV/AIDS pandemic. She has participated in 31 group and 12 solo exhibitions in South Africa and internationally. Her works are in private and public collections in Scotland, the United States, Poland, Denmark and South Africa. She has commissioned work in public buildings in Scotland and South Africa.
Kirkwood has participated in Solo Exhibitions at the 13TH International World HIV/AIDS Conference, Durban Art Gallery (2000); the N.S.A. Gallery, Durban (2001); the Grahamstown National Arts Festival (2002); and the Standard Bank Gallery, Johannesburg (2003). She has shown her work in Group Exhibitions at the Human Rights and Globalization Conference, Panchgani, India (2000); Durban Art Gallery (2003); The Africa Centre, Mtubatuba (2003); Tatham Art Gallery, Pietermaritzburg (2004); Sandton Square Gallery, Johannesburg (2004); 11th International Triennial of Tapestry, Central Museum of Textiles, Lodz, Poland (2004); "Tangencya", Durban (2004/2005); Museum of Culture, Valencia, Venezuela (2005) and the Kaunas Art Biennial, Lithuania (2005).
